The back story...
Having run and raced from an early age, my distance, until my mid-teens, was 100m sprint, when I was national champ for a couple of year until injury sidelined me.
I always remember running. I grew up close to the mountains, going hiking with my dad, a mountain leader. The longer the hike better, as we might get two soup and sandwich breaks! I ran through college, but didn’t compete, as time was scarce, but I loved the escapism.
Having biked everywhere (I didn’t drive for years) and lifeguarding through college, I decided, as soon as I could afford a racer, I would throw my hand at triathlon. Competed for a couple of years and represented Ireland in the World Half Ironman Champs in 2012, but my heart was in the trails and would always revert back to them.
I began competing on the trails and loved not checking pace and just running for the joy. Every course was different and the atmosphere more relaxed.
I moved to Australia and competed in multiple trail races there, winning the Victoria Salomon Trail Series and a few other medium distance mountain races. First ultra was Buffalo Stampede, where I place 6th and was hooked.
Moved to Canada and competed trail races here, mostly middle distance, doing one ultra, Whistler Alpine Meadows 50k, which I led until 35k ,when I fell hard, concussing myself and knocking knee out.
Moved home and fell back in love with the Cooley mountains..
